The Historic Santa Fe Foundation is a private, non-profit,
educational organization that was chartered in 1961 to receive
tax-exempt donations, to administer property, and to engage in
educational and research activities directed toward the preservation
of historic properties in Santa Fe and its environs.
The documentation of historic properties by research and the
maintenance of a registry of those deemed "worthy of preservation"
are central to the Foundation's charge of working to increase public
awareness of Santa Fe's historic heritage. Over seventy
properties have been so listed and are thereby eligible to exhibit a
bronze plaque that reads, "The Historic Santa Fe Foundation Finds
This (Building) Worthy of Preservation." In addition to
buildings, other types of structures, as well as sites, are eligible
for consideration.
All properties chosen for this recognition must first meet the
following criterion:
They must retain historic character; that is, they must not
have been so altered that they no longer convey the historic
associations for which they are significant.
Character-defining features may include exterior, interior, and
contextual elements such as gardens and open spaces.
They must also meet at least one of three further criteria:
• Embody the distinguishing
characteristics of a type of architecture identified with the
history of Santa Fe, or
• Be the site of significant
events in that history, or
• Be associated with the lives of
persons prominent in that history.
Properties less than fifty years old are rarely considered.
These criteria are similar to those used by the National Register of
Historic Places. In altering historic properties, owners are
encouraged to follow the Secretary of the Interior's
Standards and Guidelines for Rehabilitating Historic Buildings.
The Foundation’s Research Committee performs
documentation of historic properties. Its first task is to
evaluate the present condition of a property to determine whether
architectural integrity has been lost. The committee may then
document its history and significance. Finally, its research
is presented to the Board of Directors who must vote to list the
property as worthy of preservation.
Owners of listed properties are encouraged to display the
Foundation’s plaque. Research documentation may be published
in the Foundation's Bulletin and included in future editions of the
book, Old Santa Fe Today.
The Historic Santa Fe Foundation is independent of any governmental
entity or agency, and listing places no legal restrictions upon an
owner as to what may be done with a property in the future.
However, the Foundation reserves the right to remove a plaque and/or
revoke listing if, in its judgment, a property has been so altered
that it no longer meets the criteria for listing. Owners are
asked to sign a simple agreement to this effect.
Further information may be obtained by calling the Foundation
office, 983-2567.
