The Jailhouse Ranch is part of the nineteenth century Bouquet Ranch, located in Pojoaque, one of several pieces of land purchased by Juan Bouquet in 1867. The original property was owned by the prominent Ortiz family of Santa Fe, descendants of the first Spanish settlers to the region. The ranch’s primary structure is a fine example of a rural New Mexican courtyard house built in the late 1700s. In the 1930s, the house served as a temporary jail, housing convicts from the state penitentiary constructing Nambé Road, hence the name “Jailhouse Ranch.” Bars were added to the windows of the room where the prisoners were held. In 1940, the Historic American Buildings Survey surveyed and documented the property, including it in its registry of historic structures. Today the Jailhouse Ranch is a private home.
