ABOUT THE EVENT

Join HSFF for an architectural tour of Dar al Islam in Abiquiu. Designed by architect Hassan Fathy, learn about the process of constructing this large adobe building. This tour is in conjuction with Earth, Form & Memory: A Dialogue Across Cultures, El Zaguan’s October exhibition. This exhibition traces the journey of earthen architecture across continents and centuries, comparing the similarities between adobe building practices from the Middle East and New Mexico.

Dar al Islam (DAI) creates space for communities to gather, reflect, pray, and learn in the sweeping desert landscape of Abiquiu, New Mexico, in a historic architectural complex designed by renowned architect, Hassan Fathy. Since 1979, Dar al Islam has provided Muslims and non-Muslims with opportunities to learn more about Islam and engage in land-based spiritual contemplation. Dar al Islam was originally founded with the vision of establishing a self-sustaining intentional Muslim community.

Our unique and awe inspiring campus is located in Abiquiu, New Mexico, in a mosque and educational complex. Both the buildings and the landscape are deeply evocative and provide a place for spiritual contemplation, learning, leadership development, and renewal of the mind and spirit.

The incredible geological site, Plaza Blanca is located on the Dar al Islam campus. Well-known for its picturesque formations and spectacular views, the site is a wonderful place for land-related programming, hiking, spiritual contemplation, and enjoying the mystical beauty of the desert.
