The East Mountain Historical Society has completed 5 years of historic and archeological research, site preservation and planning for the Campo Stone House located in the land grant community of San Antonio at 10210 State Hwy N 14. The adobe and mason building was built around 1889, and expanded in 1933. The stone house was a center of community activities in the 19th and 20th centuries, originally the residence of Carlos Campo, an Italian immigrant who became president of the land grant and contributed to political and economic growth of the community, and at times included a store and post office, a saloon and dance hall and a venue for important community functions. The property was donated to EMHS by descendants of the original Carnuel Land Grant heirs. The historical society has developed the Master Plan for adaptive reuse of the building to be a visitor center for the Turquoise Trail in which to house educational material for the public about the history and culture of the mountain communities east of Albuquerque. After restoration of the existing building, a new addition is planned to house the EMHS archives. The 10 member planning committee, and the eight advisors are all volunteers. The next phase of the project is to find funding for paid staff to raise the funds for the architectural plan and construction. https://eastmountainhistory.org/stone-house-project-home/
