Explore history through the seasons in the historic Garden of El Zaguán

Walk through history as you walk through the historic Garden of HSFF’s El Zaguán. Led by SFE Master Gardener Ruthbeth Finerman, each tour will focus on how the garden evolves through the summer season, as well as a particular period of the Gardens History.

June 12 from 3 – 5 pm The Garden Comes Alive
Learn how El Zaguán’s 19th century ornamental garden was created and explore spring color as flowers burst into bloom. Presentation and garden tour followed by light refreshments and Q&A.

Saturday, June 25 from 10:30 am – 12:00 pm Summer Heats up the Historic Garden & Afternoon Tea

Discover how the garden gained new life and new purpose as a social center in the early 20th century, and see how plantings transition from spring to mid-summer. Presentation and garden tour followed by afternoon tea and Q&A on the portal.

Wednesday, September 23 from 10:00 am – 11:30 am “Fall” in Love with the Historic Garden

View the flower garden’s transformation into a wonderland of autumn color and find out how the garden is evolving to meet new challenges while continuing to honor history. Presentation and garden tour followed by light refreshments and Q&A.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Ruthbeth Finerman, Ph.D. is Emeritus Professor and Chair of Anthropology at the University of Memphis, where she studied ethnobotany and medicinal plants. A certified Master Gardener and Santa Fe Native Plant graduate, she leads the Santa Fe Extension Master Gardeners El Zaguán garden project. In that role she oversees the historic flower garden and offers hands-on training on plant characteristics and sustainable gardening practices.
